About our Director
Scott Corey
Scott Corey is in his 17th year as an employee of School District #2 in Billings. Starting in 1995, he served as the Choral Director at Billings Senior High School, with twelve of those years as Chair of the Music Department. His choirs have toured to various locations around the United States, and have represented Montana at festivals in San Francisco, Chicago, San Diego, Denver, Minneapolis and Seattle. A Montana native, Corey was born and raised on a farm-ranch operation near Choteau. He received his college education at M
ontana State University in Bozeman. He started his teaching career in 1990, and has spent his entire career in the state, at Simms, Colstrip and Billings. He has performed with the Intermountain Opera Company, the Bozeman Symphony Chorale, the Montana Chorale, and numerous local groups. He is a member of the American Choral Directors Association, Music Educators National Conference/National Association for Music Education, the Montana Music Educators Association, and the Montana Choral Directors Association, of which he has served as treasurer for the past eleven years. Corey is a board member of Arts Without Boundaries, a member of the Montana Arts Education Committee, as well as a member of the Alberta Bair Theater Education Advisory Committee. He has served as a clinician and adjudicator throughout Montana and northern Wyoming. He has been selected for “Who’s Who in American High School Teachers” on six occasions, and to “Who’s Who in America” three times.
This year, Corey was named as the Supervisor of Art and Music for the district. He is married and has four children who all attend the Billings schools.
Assistant Director
Dr. David Barnett Jr.
Although Dr. Barnett has had over twelve years directing the Big Sky Chorus he has decided he wants to sing in the chorus and let Scott take over the reigns.
Dr. Barnett as Director of the award-winning Big Sky Chorus, David has over 35 years experience as a music educator, choral conductor, and tenor soloist. This includes five years singing professionally with the Robert Shaw Chamber Singers and over 23
years conducting choral music at the high school, college and University level. Dr. Barnett has performed as tenor soloist with the Robert Shaw Chamber Singers, the Atlanta Symphony, the Lanier Symphony, the Gwinett Choral Guild and the Billings Symphony. A graduate of Florida State University with Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Choral Music Education, he also holds a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Miami. Choral ensembles under Dr. Barnett’s direction have performed in Carnegie Hall, as well as England and Russia. Dr. Barnett has served as a Vocal and Choral Adjudicator throughout Montana and adjacent states. Now retired, Dr. Barnett devotes his creative energies to promoting the Barbershop Harmony Society.
